World Water Council calls on all governments to prioritize global water security

    Marseille, 22 March 2017 – Worldwide, the total cost of water insecurity to the global economy is estimated at US $500 billion annually.  In observance of World Water Day, the World Water Council (WWC) calls on all governments to focus on water issues and prioritize water resources and management.  “There is an absolute necessity to increase water security, which is an essential ingredient for social and economic development in all sectors,” urges World Water Council President Benedito Braga.

    Inaugural Meeting of the Roundtable on Financing Water

    Together with the World Water Council and the Netherlands, the OECD is establishing this Roundtable to facilitate an ongoing dialogue between the water and finance communities (broadly interpreted) on how to overcome the global challenges of financing the investments needed for water security and sustainable economic growth and water’s contribution to the wider set of Sustainable Development Goals.     8th Forum: Thematic Commission and Coordination Groups joint meeting

    On 2 and 3 February, the Thematic Commission of the 8th World Water Forum organized a meeting with the Theme Coordination Groups. The meeting, which can be considered as the starting point of the 8th World Water Forum Thematic Process, took place in Brasilia and followed the approval by the International Steering Committee of the Theme Coordinators in early January. All forty-five Coordinators attended the meeting, either in person or remotely.
     

    Water security for greater social justice

    World Water Council President Benedito Braga participated in an international workshop focused on the Human Right to Water and held at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences in Vatican City on 23 February. Speaking during the seminar “Geopolitics of water: the impact of climate change in water systems. Conflicts and perspectives”, President Braga focused his message on the absolute necessity of building water security to overcome the challenges brought by a changing climate to ensure peace worldwide.

    Watershed – Replenishing Water Values for a Thirsty World

    On March 22nd, World Water Day 2017, Pope Francis will inspire a global conversation. His address from the Vatican will help shift how the world values and understands its single most precious resource: water. Immediately following the Papal address, at 10:30 a.m. CET, 400 thought leaders from around the world will convene at WATERSHED. These policy makers and academics, together with students, artists, business leaders and men and women from the most at-risk populations will begin an unprecedented dialogue around the value and values of water.

    World Water Council granted UNFCCC observer status

    The World Water Council has been officially granted observer status to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) during the 22nd Conference of Parties (CoP). This new status will enable the Council to engage more substantially with the climate negotiation processes and strengthen its efforts in raising visibility for water within the climate debate.
