Voice of the youth : “Youth Perspectives: A New Year’s Call to Conserve Water”
by Luca Jendrek, Youth Delegate, Europe region, World Water Council
As the new year begins, it’s the perfect moment to reflect on our habits and set meaningful resolutions. Eating healthier, exercising more, spending time with loved ones—these are familiar goals. But what if this year, you commit to making a difference for the planet? Specifically, by conserving water?
Here are some inspiring water-saving resolutions from young people around the world:
“I save water by using engineering principles. I do correct irrigation calculations at my organic farm to avoid wasting a single drop. I also use a solar pump to save energy, as here in Madeira Island, energy comes mostly from fossil fuels.” — Arthur, Portugal
“I fill up my sink for washing up rather than leaving the tap running. When cooking, I reuse the cooking water. Did you know you can let vegetable cooking water cool and then use it to water your garden or plants?” — Rebecca, UK
“Through personal hygiene, you can also conserve water. For instance, I don’t shower every day. Instead, a few times a week, I use a small bucket with just enough water to wash my armpits, groin, face, and feet—the areas where bacteria typically accumulate first.” — Sabrina, Morocco
“Growing up in Cyprus taught me to value freshwater since it barely rains here. When I’m about to shower, I place a bucket to catch the cold water running before it heats up, which I reuse later. Similarly, when I wash vegetables, I collect the water in a bucket to use for watering plants or other garden chores.” — Christina, Cyprus
While individual actions may seem small, their collective impact is significant. These tips and tricks not only conserve our scarce water resources but also nurture a deeper connection with the environment and foster greater awareness of the planet’s needs.
Making environmental consciousness part of your resolutions this year benefits both the Earth and your sense of purpose. By taking these steps, we can actively protect vital resources while enriching our lives with responsibility and mindfulness. Let’s make 2025 the year of impactful change—starting with water.
