Water has always been a central concern for humanity. Here in Egypt more than elsewhere, and for a very long time. We live in a fast-changing world, sometimes all too sharply, and water is therefore impacted adversely by these changes. Every day, for several months, we have been told that climate change could have serious consequences for our planet. It is possible. But as leaders, as political and economic decision-makers in your countries, you know that today you have to face other challenges, often far more dreadful than the climate.

Changes in the climate variability and trends are in general expected to exacerbate water stress. Climate influences agriculture, forestry and fisheries in various direct and indirect ways. A change in temperature rainfall will impact productivity - particular in rain fed agricultural systems. Today, however, it remains a challenge to isolate the climate signal from other drivers of change that occur simultaneously. As a result overall uncertainty remains high.

Sustainable development has been around for a while, and still we have to come together here today to discuss what are the essentials that connect water to sustainable development in the Mediterranean. For too long, we have considered it to be a luxury item, good for tomorrow but not so relevant for the development of today. Now with pollution further on the rise, and water supply and sanitation levels still unsufficient, we start to see that it is critical for societies prosperity to address sustainability at the centre of our development strategies.
